January, 2021 - Don't Belong Here is an animated image that explores the remains of the Residential Schools (St. Joseph's school for girls & St. Peter Claver/Garnier High School for boys). The name evokes a duality that on one hand speaks to the Indigenous children who were stripped from their families and forced to assume a life & identity that was not theirs.

It likewise represents the Church, the Residential School system and the administrators whose attempts to commit genocide by way of assimilation; the passing of innocence & the erosion of cultural identity on stolen land.

This piece takes it cue from patterns gleaned in various photographs of skies, the residential girls’ school and its surroundings. It locates, acknowledges and releases the residuals that remain. #DUALITY #RESIDUALS #MEMORY #IDENTITY #PLACE #LAND
